An attractive and unusual hand-coloured mid-17th century map of the Ancient Middle East, India and South-east Asia as perceived by Abraham Ortelius and copied by Jan Jansson (1588-1664) for inclusion in Jansson’s atlas of the Antique World – Accuratissima Orbis Antiqui Delineatio, that was first published in Latin in Amsterdam in 1652 with other Latin editions in 1654 and 1660. The maps shows how little was known about the Far East in classical times with reference to Ptolemy’s Aurea Chersonensus, or Golden Chersonese, the Malay peninsula and Sumatra (joined by a narrow land bridge) where alluvial gold deposits were mined.
