Banguwangi in East Java c. 1835

An early to mid-19th century French black and white very finely detailed aquatint of the village of Banguwangi in East Java, the modern-day ferry point for passengers and cargo travelling to Bali by Sigismond Himely (1801-1872) . The print is Plate 61 from Voyage autour de monde par les mers de l’Inde et de la Chine de la corvette de sa Majeste La Favorite execute pendant les annees 1803, 1831, 1832 sous le commandement de M. Laplace, first published in Paris by Finot in 1835. The print shows a horse-drawn carriage in a coconut palm-lined avenue coming away from a ceremony in Banyuwangi village.
